Greasemonkey Scripts: Friend Feed Twitter Client and Remove Visited Links

Web Browser Tips & Tricks

“Friend Feed” week seems to be continuing at IDT. But don’t worry, there’s a team of trained attack Bonobo monkeys prepared to take me into a dark alley and beat me up and make me suffer if I don’t stop talking about Friend Feed. What can I say? This is what it looks like when a web app gets people excited. I’ve put together two more Greasemonkey scripts to add features I want in Friend Feed.

How to Install Greasemonkey Scripts

Script: Remove Visited Links

One of the biggest problems with Friend Feed is the signal to noise ratio. Most of the web services it supports are for sharing links, and I keep seeing the same link percolating as different people share them. Wouldn’t it be great if it didn’t display links you’ve already looked at?

Before

After

Yes, it will hide the comments/likes for links you’ve already visited. What’s nice is that it uses Friend Feed’s built-in Hide feature. So it will remember to hide links even if you use Friend Feed from more than one computer.

Script: Twitter Enhancements

Yesterday I noted that about 50% of the traffic on Friend Feed is from Twitter. I think Friend Feed makes for a great Twitter client because of the way it handles threaded conversations. There’s a few things missing from Friend Feed though:

  • The 140 character count
  • Why doesn’t it automatically check the “reply on Twitter” box?
  • Why can’t I send a Tweet from Friend Feed?

Twitter Reply Enhancements

If you respond to a tweet, you’ll always send it by Twitter as well as Friend Feed.

Click to Send a Tweet

Clicking ‘tweet’ will open this box

You can send Tweets directly from Friend Feed!

Username / Password

You will be asked for your username / password after installing the script. Greasemonkey stores your user/password combination in your web browser. If you need to reset your password click on the Tools menu in Firefox.

Shameless Promotion

Because I am a shameless media whore the first time you run the script it will send this message. This is how I test that you’ve entered the correct username/password. You should never see this tweet again unless you are changing your username / password very often.

My Other Friend Feed Greasemonkey Scripts

The scripts are packaged separately instead of being one massive script so that you can choose want you want to use.

Oh sure pick on me :) .. nice work and if I used Firefox I’d be grabbing both scripts before they were all gone.

Hey great job on these scripts! If you want more friendfeed related topics, then look @ http://disqus.com for a blog Commenting system that ties into the system there.

    @ n8k99:

Yup, I use Disqus for my tumblr blogs. The one thing I hate about it though is I’d rather keep my comments stored in my blogging software. My experience with Haloscan years ago taught me that comment portability is a pain in the ass when the service you’re using starts to go wonky.

I can certainly understand that, especially if you’ve been biten once before. So far, it happens to be the most interesting service that ties in, even more exciting to me than twitter threading!

    Hey,

Nice post. I think friendfeed works well its because of its threaded conversation feature which gives a way to healthy conversation.

    @ ரவிசங்கர்:

FF3 beta does not play nicely with most extensions. Nothing I can do about it :(
