81 movies for geeks that do not suck

Posted in Movies, Popular Posts, Technology by engtech on December 9th, 2006

Write what you know. In this case, what I know about is being a geek. Over the next few days I’ll be suggesting things that I liked. The list is sci-fi/fantasy/comic book heavy. Surprisingly low on the “computer related movies” tip, but we blame that on the fact that most computer-related movies suck ass.81 flicks in total, but I’m sure I’ve missed some. Leave a comment and tell us your favs. I didn’t include any movies I hadn’t seen, so that may be why your “this list sucks because it’s missing XXXXXX” was missing. Also, it is skewed to the mid/late-20s demographic.

Is this the definitive list that should be written in stone for the children of the future? No. It’s a geek listing some of his favorite flicks on a personal blog.

Links to Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB for each movie to make the list easier to cross-reference. Trailers are hosted on IMDB (but we have not double-checked that all of the links lead to a trailer). Movie review scores are taken directly from Rotten Tomatoes and provided for reference — if you have a beef with the numbers, take that up with the professional film critics of the world. It’s not my fault.

Romance movies for men and women

My girlfriend and I have done another list like this for romantic films. Just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Okay, so most of the movies I can either agree with, or I haven’t seen and can’t comment. But I have to say, I really didn’t expect to see Chronicles of Riddick on the list because it sucked big time. Or are we now defining a cool geek movie as something with good special effects despite the rest of the movie?

et: Chronicles of Riddick is not on the list

Please tell me what makes most of these movies “geek” movies? (And these ones that aren’t at all geek movies are pretty much the only ones on this list that don’t suck REALLY bad.

What about Swordfish? That was a decent movie and I liked the 60-second challenge. ;-)

Sadly though, only the first Matrix movie was on here. I was hoping to see all four of them listed.

Besides, what ever happened to “Revenge of the Nerds”?

et: Swordfish and Revenge of the Nerds added

Hmmm, dude, how you you add movies to that list that only gets a 6/10 rating? In my own definition, 6/10 movies usually sucks..

most of these movies suck, and most of those wich are good have a bad score, like fight club and many others..
also, some of these movies are really old… so it would have been nice to put the year of wen it was released too.. that would save lots of time to other people…

et: Scores are copied from RT. Good thought about the year, too late now though

I mean this list is I guess alright. I’m not too sure why The Girl Next Door and Elf is on the list. Umm…I do agree that Real Genius and The Nerds Series should be listed. How about Short Circuit or Short Circuit 2? The Fly? The Fly II? Dragonheart? Ferris Bueller! How can you list Spiderman and X-men without having Batman? There’s a crapload more I can list.

Perhaps you should have had this list at 100 rather than 81. Is there a significance to 81?

et: Elf dropped. Real Genius, Revenge of the Nerds, Batman Begins added.

Excellent list. Of course, there will always be a few items missing as noted above.

And the LOTR is definitely not the definitive version that’s for sure. :)

Anyways, I just created a top ten version of this list at tenpsotting.com which is a site that makes it easy to create and share top ten lists. Check it out here:

If you wanted to, you could also embed the list within your blog so you can encourage your readers to edit the list and see what the overall top ten might be.

Anyways, thanks for taking the time to make this. It’s awesome!

Chronicles of Riddick - Included only because you can get Pitch Black, the cartoon and Chronicles as a three-pack for the same price as Pitch Black alone.
    Anti-trust - haven’t seen it.
Real Genius - Good pick, forgot about it.
Johnny Mneumonic is one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen.
Swordfish - Good pick, forgot about it.
Revenge of the Nerds - Good pick.
Matrix: Reloaded and Revolutions left a bad taste in my mouth. The first one, the “making of” and parts of Animatrix are great tho.
2001 - Incredibly boring. Silent Running would have been a good pick tho.
Star Trek flicks? I gave up on the francise a while back (*loses all geek cred*)
Lord of the Rings. Yeah, I meant the Peter Jackson version, not the Ralph Bakshi.
